    Poem Commentary

I travel the Georgia highways often and began seeing many turtles smashed. When I saw one not hurt I would pull my car over and look for a chance to rescue it. Now I am always on the look out for turtles.

    The Turtle Rescuer

I watch for turtles crossing the street, The turtle not realizing how dangerous the feat. If a fast pace it cannot run, Its life here on earth soon will be done. I see a turtle crossing a street, Scrambling so slowly on its tiny feet. It dawdles so slowly, the cars driving by, If I don’t help it, who then will try. The turtle doesn’t have much of a chance, Not knowing which car will end its last stance. So I stop when I see one no matter the time, And pick it up gently as if it were mine, I then find a safe place where it can roam, Hoping deep down that it makes it to home. Some drivers think it a sport, The turtle to trample, not caring the turtle is temporal. What makes them do it where is the joy, It is just a small turtle not some plastic toy. Some people enjoy smashing it in, But there is no need to hurt a small terrapin. As I travel the highway it isn’t long, Before I see something up ahead, What is that small thing on this road I tread? And if it’s a turtle I hope it’s not dead! Is it too late or is there still time, To rescue the small turtle while still in its prime. I stop my car and find it alive, With its head in its shell pulled deep inside. Its legs and the tail also tucked in, Feeling so scared and hiding within. While I am waiting the cars drive by fast, I find myself fretting the next car may be the last. The turtle’s chances diminish with each passing car, So I patiently wait to go get it and move it safely afar. Who gave me this job and why do I care, I don’t know why but the desire is there. If I can rescue but one and send it safely away, It just makes me happy that I helped it live at least one more day. Ken Haines 12/09

I've picked up my share of the critters and agree a helping hand is needed sometimes. When I lived in Florida also I came in contact with the dear Gopher turtle and not knowing they were ground dwellers I tried to get it to water. LOL my back yard was near a canal and it would keep coming back to dry land. I learned in time. You've a sensitive side and try to put your work in verse form. Easier to read, although I enjoyed this in any form. Justalady

Thank you. I now have found to turtle rescuers. Without my emotions I wouldn't have any poems. I just try to put them to verse so others may be uplifted and realize they are not the only ones that go through multiple emotions as we all go through life. No one is alone. Thanks for taking time to write. Your story about the Gopher turtle is really funny. Take care, Ken

Hey Ken, nice job. I don't know about Georgia but down here in Florida you would have a full time job as we have Gopher turtles all over crossing the roads. I used to rescue them myself till my wife made me promise to stop so I wouldn't end up smashed on the road myself. They are protected down here so I get annoyed when guys pull over and pitch them into their pick-up and take them home for turtle soup as often happens. Keep up the good work, your becoming a prolific poet.

Your words are encouraging. Thank you. Yes, for some reason I can't pass up helping a turtle and I am glad you are of the same mindset. You keep up the good work in Florida and I will in Georgia. Maybe my poem will inspire others to do the same, one turtle at a time. Thanks Whiskers, Ken
