The Road to the Castle

Poem Commentary

With “The Road to the Castle” pay attention to the change of tense after the first stanza. The present tense adopted in the following stanzas is technique by the writer (Me) to tell the reader that the ‘phenomenon’ is still happening –as emphasized in the last stanza….let’s see the other meanings you can read into it. It’s said poems are like the diamonds in nature –many meanings.

The Road to the Castle

The Road to the Castle

There was a road that led to the castle

There were feet that were dragged on it to the castle,

Feet of languishing abducted royals

Stocked in rusty shackles.

There is a road that leads to the castle

It is a road of mysteries that speaks of the ancient,

It is a road of sorrows for there you shall find the marks of pain

Endured for centuries.

There is a road that leads to the castle

Littered with aborted and broken dreams,

Dreams of African royals

Long ago stolen from the tropical Palace.

There is a road that leads to the castle

Full of indelible memories centuries-age old,

Memories that come with sense of pride

And a moment of sober reflection.

There is a road that leads to the castle

It is a road that brings back to us the consequences of our errors yesterday,

It is a road that instructs us about the future,

And controls our intellect.

There is a road that leads the castle

It leads to the castle where our noble royals died

Stocked to the dumpy dungeons,

There is a road that leads to the castle

On it you shall still find indentured slaves

On it they go chancing a mirage.
