    The Loss of Innocence

What once was pure is pure no more.
Your outlook on life is different than before.
You hung up your skates for keys to a car.
You no longer need mom she now parents from afar.
Your friends are new and so is your hair.
The little girl inside is no longer there.
You now have secrets; you now tell lies.
No longer an angel, but evil in disguise.
Your words no longer sweet; they cut to the bone.
You hate family functions; you'de rather be alone.
You're intent to be rebellious no matter the cost.
You'll never have it again your innocence is lost.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
