The Lion's Den
let's play, she said, in her sweet little way
as she held out a messy tub full of clay
sorry, i can't, sweety, not today
with a sigh the little girl toddles away
and her mother dreams of another day
when she wasn't too tired, when her feet never hurt
too much to run outside and play in the dirt
when she wasn't afraid to sit out in the sun
for fear someone might see the damage he'd done
can you read me a book, mom, he asks pleadingly
what he hears is; God! just let him BE!
she wraps him up in her arms fearfully
before she is pulled too quickly away,
SMACK! Aaaah! Bang!
SLAM goes the door, out goes the light
theu hold back their tears so it won't start a fight
no lullabies, no tucking in tight, just;
Grow up! You're too old for stories at night!
the angels play quietly outside their home
with knowledge inside them no child should own
inside their mother is cooking alone
for now he is sleeping but who knows just when
his hunger will drive him to hunt once again
the fear lives inside them, eats them alive
and each one of them wonders who will survive?
outside a bird takes flight from the sand
the children watch as it soars through the blue
they know it means something, but what can you do
when freedom's a concept you can't understand
and love is like feeding a wild beast from your hand?
tonight, all three ask will this be the end?
for all of them sleep in the lion's den
as she held out a messy tub full of clay
sorry, i can't, sweety, not today
with a sigh the little girl toddles away
and her mother dreams of another day
when she wasn't too tired, when her feet never hurt
