The Greatest Scam that Never Was

The Greatest Scam that Never Was

He tried; oh did he ever try

To get by with the greatest lie

And he died, his soul bled inside

Cast aside by the one voice from which he can’t hide

The greatest scam that never was

Was nothing more than earthen dust

Above the light shone brightly in

Revealing emptiness in him

Perpetual man of love and faith

Was so much more than he could take

His daughter loves but her heart breaks

But he loves the thrill more than himself and her sake

The greatest scam that never was

Was nothing more than earthen dust

Below the darkness soon swelled in

Revealing nothingness to him

How is all that working for your mind?

Did you know you’ve left the world behind?

Is humility greater than the crime?

Will you save what little you have in time?

The greatest scam that never was

Was nothing more than earthen dust

Behind the bars truth spills from sin

Revealing deception to friends

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
