The Abortion

Poem Commentary

I wrote this from the perspective of a African American teenager who has a hard life and wants to die becasue that seems to be the easy way out of his situation.

The Abortion

I was born into a miserable life; I feel hopeless and helpless,
You see my father was irresponsible and my mother was selfish.
He was trying to have sex but not trying to have a baby,
My mother was acting like a hoe, but wanted to be seen as a lady.
She decides to keep me and said to hell with your father I don't need him,
So my father ran away like a slave searching for freedom.
As the years went by, many men came into my life and out of her bedroom,
Now I'm older with a chip on my shoulder I think I'll be dead soon.
Because my mother has given up, she has had it, now she is an addict,
She started off getting high just to get by, now it's a daily habit.
What's wrong mama things aint what they were suppose to be,
It's seems like you love that needle more than you're close me.
Why didn't you practice safe sex, or why didn't one of you get a latex?
If you couldn't afford me, then why didn't you abort me?
Because I didn't ask for this, I know you were told about abstinence,
Why didn't you practice this, it seems like I am the one mad at this,
I can't say in the future I will look back and laugh at this,
Cause I'm going to end up dead or in jail anyway base on percentages and averages,
What the hell do you expect when you live amongst savages?
So thank you mom for this miserable life I was forced in,
Now I guess I will have to kill myself since you were too selfish to get the abortion.

Wow this is really deep I can relate and I am inspirited to write something like this...

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
