    Runway

We drove silently down a road paved in gray
Blind to the brightness of the day
The trees rushed by but we sat still
    Your silence was shrill

I reached for your hand so soft
But in the end I always got lost
I've stared at you through sparkles in an old paperweight
Dull sparkles gleaming, a lost hand, searching for a mate

We listened to a sad old song
Sitting still as the world moved along
I stood at a crowded airport and watched you fly away
    The runway paved in gray

I lost the only man I will ever really love
Who flew away not on a plane, but on the wings of a dove

To my Dad who I hope someday will understand
That I have never stopped searching for his hand
