"Good Luck Upon Your Journey"

“Good Luck Upon Your Journey”

I heard you were caught at the crossroads

and didn’t know which way to turn.

I hope you find what you are looking for;

all those who love you are awaiting your return.

That question what’s around them?

What’s wrong?  What’s right?

Living in a world so cold at times

all the blankets in the world won’t bring the warmth you search to find.

The hugs don’t seem to help,

 the tears still flow.

There are signs up ahead,

but which way do you go?

One says, “Come this way

to a place without pain.”

One says, “Follow me,

I’ll take you to love.” It claims

One says, "Follow me,

I make no promises at all.”

“Except to take you to a place

with no end, with no walls.”

You travel down the road to love

and the warmth comes streaming in,

Only to be blasted

by a frightening cold wind.

The cold feels very uninviting,

very numbing and strong,

Just as you get use to the cold

 the warmth comes back around.

The warmth feels welcoming,

safe and secure,

Then the cold comes back again,

bringing back your fear

As you travel down this road

you decide to turn and go back

This road has too many changes

and you’re tired of that

You go back to the crossroads

only two roads to discover

Where does the path on each road lead?

Which mystery do you uncover?

Which road is going to lead you,

to the place you wish to be?

Will road number two take you there,

or will it be number three?

As you stand and contemplate

on which way to go

The road that promises no pain

beckons you “Come close”

It whispers “Follow me,

I’ll take away your pain,

I’ll take away the fear you feel,

the hurtful things that people say.”

“If you follow me you’ll find paradise,

your suffering will end.

Follow me; I’m the road you want.

I’ll become your very best friend.”

Road two whispers in a way

that you don’t seem to hear,

Road two is screaming to you.

“Beware! Please beware!!”

Road two is trying to tell you

that you are being deceived.

“The road without pain is lying to you;

its real name is the road of the deceased.”

“It will stop your pain

but it will end your life too,

Please follow me,

I’m begging you.”

You don’t hear anything

except the whispers from road three.

You begin to walk down that road

looking for some peace.

As you walk

you hear a song play

You relax as it goes

with you on your way

The sky becomes cloudy,

it’s peaceful and calm

It seems to be the right road,

it seems like you belong

The surroundings feel close,

they huddle all around

You feel like they are closing in

pushing you to the ground

It gets darker and darker

all the colors start to fade

You are fading into your surroundings

you want to escape

“You lied to me!” you scream,

“You said there was no pain!”

“So why do I feel hurt?

Why do I feel shame?”

You run to go back

towards the light you fly

The clouds all disappear

you ask yourself why

Back to the crossroads

back to confusion

There is just one road left,

what if it is also an illusion?

As you turn to look around

for another direction to go

You hear road number two,

“Look behind you.  Now go.”

“Look at the name

of road number three.

Do you see what it says?

It’s the road of the deceased.”

“Now please give me a chance,

please listen to me

If you follow my path,

this is what you’ll see.”

As you gaze down road two

an image starts to appear

It calls out your name,

it seems to sound familiar

“Come down this way,

I need you with me.

I’ll guide you, I’ll save you,

I’ll set your soul free.”

As you take a few steps

the image becomes clear

You walk a little faster

the image draws near.

You look in her eyes

she’s beautiful young and sure

She’s everything you want to be

but you still feel insecure

The song you heard on road number three

again begins to play

There are arms about you, holding you,

to protect you on your way.

The weather changes all around

but steadily not erratic

You find this road a little rough at times

but it encourages you to keep traveling.

There’s a hill up ahead it looks very steep,

you wonder if you can climb it.

The image of that girl appears

“I’ll climb with you, come on just try it.”

As you ascend you see all the people who love you,

they are cheering you on.

“We’ll be there as your journey continues;

we’ll be here to help you go on.”

“I promised you no walls,

I’ll promise to you again,

if you follow my path

it will lead you to your best friend.”

“I’ll give you everything you’ll need

to make all the right choices.

Now it’s up to you to do the rest,

please listen to those voices.”

“They’ll lead you where you want to go

and even if you turn back,

They’ll be here when you return to this road,

to defray your fears and sadness.”

“Good luck upon your journey,

I will say no more

Except that you are on the right path,

stay here and you’ll go far.”

I wrote this poem in hopes that it would help my friend's duaghter who was suicidal at the time. I am happy and relieved to say that it did. This poem is very special to me for that reason. I hope it will help others turn away from suicde. for those who don't know who the girl speaking for road three, it is the young lady herself. We are our own best friends and must be be fore we can truely befriend someone else.
