Peace of mind

Peace of mind

Just when I think I’m on the mend,
The road I’m driving on comes to an end.
I feel it creeping in and I can’t pretend,
Against my own mind I have to fend.

I had sworn it was gone, but I guess I was wrong,
Like a broken record it plays the same sad song.
Don’t worry I’ll be ready enough before long,
I’m taking my time and it’s making me strong.

Where exactly did my sanity go?
I’m looking for it -- perhaps you know?
There it is, hanging out of the backseat window!
Tongue wagging in the wind, putting on a show.

You sneaky bastard, you keep on breaking me down.
But I’ve had enough, I’m pulling myself up off the ground.
Listen closely, I know you can hear my heart pound
It grows louder as I come closer to being found.

You lie to me -- you say you’ll go away
Why do I listen when I know you’ll stay?
You’re always there, but just hiding in the gray
Be careful next time you creep out to play.

I’m hitting the gas this time because I know what I’ll find
Enough of your games get out of my mind!
I’m escaping your maze, no looking behind,
Bringing back the painful memories… you’re so unkind.

I only look forward, because the mirrors are a trick you love to use
I’m growing more and more impatient with these blues
I have the power, and it’s my turn to choose
You try to make me falter, but now I refuse.

Magnificent are these streetlights, how they shine so bright!
I’ve passed the end sign and not a dead end in sight
You took me hostage, but you’ve finally lost the fight
Your roadblocks don’t work -- I’ve overcome this plight.

I like very nice keep it up

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
