only a searcher
she told me
if you don't know what it is you seek
you will always be only a searcher.
I nodded like I understood
but I didn't.
Wanted to find my daddy.
It was all I ever wanted.
Wasn't it?
She tells me
if that's all you want
then go find him.
You know where he's buried.
I said, of course, that is what I should do.
I smiled at her brilliant idea.
So I packed a bag
and got on a plane
and got close.
very close.
but couldn't quite make it
down to where he was.
It was only a day's drive.
Nine hundred sixty seven miles.
Find his stone.
Take the picture.
Leave a letter.
Or seven.
Go.
Get in your car.
Drive.
She stood by
out of view
arms crossed
smirking.
If you ever actually get there
(she said)
what will you search for then?
You'll have to find something else
insurmountable unobtainable ellusive
won't you?
So then that's not really it, is it?
But she was not unkind.
she told me
if you don't know what it is you seek
you will always be only a searcher.
A searcher I will be then
until I know for sure.
