On the Phone

what is fate, but a coming together
maybe too soon, maybe too late
when do we really know if its too be
is it the first time, the past, or the future we see
is it meant to be in the stars aligned so right
or is it something that if we believe in, we stop and fight
can you really say you are over me, and me over you
is this a lie, or is it true
if we are destined to see once again, what we both can bring
isn't it worth at least to open your heart and let it sing
don't shut out what might happen, and what could become
life is a merry go round, do you get on, or stay on the ground to be numb
am I worth a second chance, a second look
or did you get all, and then close the book
am I a page in your novel of life
or possibly a chapter full or love and not strife
I loved you then years ago
and you loved me enough since seventy-two, to not let go
timing was bad, we both can't deny this
but second chances are something we shouldn't miss
if you want me to let go and leave you alone
call me and say it, with your voice on the phone

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
