When I answer the phone they are charmed by my sweet voice.
But as soon as I walk through the door their expressions change slightly.
I realize that they were expecting a white woman not me.
Chocolate brown skin, full-figured, afro-wearing, statuesk nubin queen to show up.
You see I moved from Queens NY, with all West Indian's around me.
To Alexandria VA with two black kids in my classes.
So instead of sounding black I sound like a white girl.
My family made fun of me but I ignored it even through it hurt.
Then momma told me one day you are going to love your voice.
Because opportunites are going to come because of it
So I began to love my voice
Then I met my ex-husband
He joked me about my white sounding voice
He useto tell me to stop talking to my white friends
Well the jokes on him with his white wife
I should have told him to stop fucking white girls.
Anyway they say you can't be black you don't sound black
Well an all white school will with great educators will do that to you
Having mainly white friends does it too
But you see I don't mind sounding white
I'm just using the English language the way it's suppose to be used
So when I'm called for a interview they will give it to me
Thinking I'm white
They'll read my resume
This white sounding full-figured, chocolate brown skinned, afro-wearing, statuesk nubin queen
Will be sitting behind my huge desk with an awesome view that was prepare for a white person.
Call her white secretary asking
"When is my next meeting?"
