My Little Girl

MY LITTLE GIRL SO SMALL AND SWEET

THE INSTANT I LAID EYES ON YOU, I BEGAN TO WEEP

YOU WERE PLACED IN MY ARMS WITH SUCH CARE

AND AT THE MOMENT YOU KNEW YOU BELONGED THERE

THE BOND THAT WE SHARE ONLY STRAIGHTENS BY DAY

BUT WE WOULDN'T HAVE IT ANY OTHER WAY

I HAVE TO KEEP REMINDING MYSELF THE TIME THAT HAS PASSED

BECAUSE YOU ARE GROWING UP WAY TOO FAST

IT SEEMS LIKE ONLY YESTERDAY

I WAS PUTTING RIBBONS IN YOUR HAIR

NOW THAT YOU'RE A TEENAGER

ALL I HEAR IS "I DON'T CARE"

WELL MY LITTLE GIRL SO SMALL AND SWEET, I WILL ALWAYS CARE

AND WHEN THINGS GO WRONG AS THEY SOMETIMES DO

REMEMBER I WILL ALWYS BE THERE FOR YOU

This is sweet although not polished prose it speaks a mothers heart and is a good expression of her joy

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
