A Mother's Pain

A Mother's Pain

A MOTHER'S PAIN, IT'S LIKE NO OTHER

YOU SHED A TEAR, ONE AFTER ANOTHER

YOU HAVE TO BE STRONG, IT'S YOUR ROLE

WHEN YOUR HEART IS BREAKING, AND SO IS YOUR SOUL

THIS LIFE, YOU'VE CARED FOR, FOR SO LONG

COULD CARE LESS HE'S DOING YOU WRONG

HE DOESN'T SEE IT THE WAY YOU DO

HE DOESN'T FEEL THE PAIN HE'S CAUSING YOU

BUT TIME WILL PASS, AS WILL THE PAIN

LITTLE BY LITTLE, WITH EACH PASSING RAIN

AS TIME TURNS YOUR SON INTO A MAN

AND YOU NO LONGER NEED TO HOLD HIS HAND

THERE WILL COME A TIME WHEN HE WHISPERS

WHAT A WONDERFUL MOTHER I HAVE HAD

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
