Missing

It's getting to be summer
Summer was your time
With it's heat
and wind and rain
hurricanes
No hurricanes that last year
Just sun and heat
Sun bleached your hair and ball cap
Dad took our picture on the boat
"Careful" he said and you looked up at the sky

I'm older than you now
In my only picture of you
you smile
so proud of our small brother
Don't you know we need you?
He needs you

It's summer now
and the sun beats down
and you missed it
this year

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
