Poem Commentary

I had a trist with a wizard what can I sayt

Melting Away

and now the magic melts away
like the candles that we burned
and in my mind I'm going through
the pages that we turned
we had the moon we had the stars
the rainbow and it's gold was ours
then in a moment drenched in pain
resentment poured down like the rain
our purple scarlet souls turned grey
we watched the magic melt away
and now the memory melts my soul
like the candles that we burned
and in my mind I lock away
the pages that we've turned

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
