Love This, Hate This, Both That

Once upon a day in school
A boy to a girl said I love you

Replied the girl so happily
I'm much too young, you can't love me

Once in the summer, one day at the pool
The boy to the girl said now I love you

Replied the girl so sinisterly
We aren't alike, you can't love me

Once at dinner he knelt down with a phew,
Said the boy to the girl, can't you see I love you?

Replied the girl with a shocked look of glee
Oh, I love you too! I'm so glad you love me!

Once a few years later, when he engaged a dual
Said the boy to the girl, An Affair! I hate you!

Replied the girl with a touch of misery
I hate you too, and now you hate me

Once then and there, after words that were cruel
Said the boy to the girl, how can I love you?

Replied the girl with a grrrrr and a reeee
I think I love it when you hate me

Once after that, when he sat down and was cool
Said the boy to the girl, I think I love that too

Said the girl to the boy and the boy to the girl
When love and hate are one, what's with this weird world!

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
