Love Between a Mother and a Daughter

A mother stood by her baby girl’s bed,
Singing a lullaby in her head.
Never letting her out of her sight,
She slept with her baby every night.

Life was hard and money was tight,
She made sure we ate every night.
She washed our clothes by hand every day,
At night she kneeled by her bed to pray.

Every Sunday morning she took me to church,
Then we would come home to watch the birds sit on their perch.
We planted flowers to put in the window,
And planted a garden down in the meadow.

Dad never had a steady job,
We had nothing to steal so we never got robbed.
We barely had food to keep on the table,
Struggling to keep the whole family stable.

With fighting and bickering their love had disappeared,
They had a divorce without me being there.
I cried the day I saw my dad leave,
I thought he would be there forever with me.

I saw my family tragically torn apart,
As I slept in my bed with a broken heart.
The anger came and I hated my mother,
When I found out she had another lover.

He was good to me but I missed my dad,
I thought I was punished for being bad.
I went to my dad’s on Christmas Day,
I loved it there but was not allowed to stay.

In October my mother married her new lover,
And now I have a cute little brother.
I helped her take care of him every day,
He laughed so eagerly when we would play.

Finally we managed to get along great,
No more anger and no more hate.
I love my mother for all she has done,
For giving me a brother who is adorable and fun.

I saw my father at church on Sunday,
He looked so happy to see me that day.
We talked about my hopes and dreams,
He told me nothing is what it seems.

He met a woman, who treated him well,
He is very happy so in love he fell.
I had the privilege to pick their wedding day,
I know the love in them will forever stay.

In January I married a man from New York,
My mother didn’t like him from the start.
She finally saw a side of him that she never had before,
When he held my hand opened the car door.

Now the two of them were like mother and son,
She now knows two halves can make one.
My father says he has some persuading to do,
So he does what my dad asks him to do.

My brother is the joy in my life,
Other than being a happy wife.
The most important people in my life get along great,
Makes me so happy as it lifts such a heavy weight.

May 28th 2004 is when my mother passed away,
Her heart stopped beating on a sad Friday.
It was such a shock to hear the tragic news,
To admit she was gone I had to refuse.

When they put her in the ground I thought I would die,
It was just like burring her alive.
I thought to myself it was a very bad dream,
Sad as it was, it is just as it seems.

The love I hold for my mother will never disappear,
I have to remember her spirit is always near.
A hard working woman whose life we will never forget,
Will always be remembered with love and respect.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
