    Poem Commentary

My daughter and nephew, warriors abgainst each other.

    Like Honey and Vinegar.

No one, only each other can hurt the other,
Related by siblings, mother and father,
Hug of love, each time one another sees,
Warring latter the hugs like a mortal enemies.
No more than half a turn of the hands,
Peace is broken like if in distant lands,
Smack, yell, scream, thump, are always heard,
Not too long before the need arrives for the thread.
Like honey and vinegar are their traits,
One is giving, the other surely that hates,
    Independence and winter calm,
Summer turmoil acts like a lamb.
Holding hands they will be seen then and again,
Surely will be followed by one of their pain,
Like water and oil they cannot blend,
But both so needed to this man's end

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
