    LIES

    Lies

A lie is like the bursting of a dam,
What a surprise! You can’t hold it back.
Wherever it passes, it demolishes everything, crushes,
    It crushes beauty.

    II

Such destruction, it doesn’t fit in me anymore.
Pay attention! Do anything to me,
Just don’t lie to me, not anymore.

    III

You spent precious time with me,
    Forged a beautiful relationship. However
The moment you lie, you destroy everything.
Look at me attentively, don’t adorn my life
With your lies. Lies only bring me anguish.

    IV

Lies dwell in me, in you and in everyone.
Lies dwell everywhere. However, to use it or not is a matter of
Resisting the temptation of cheating others. Think well,
Before you hurl the first lie to the wind. It spreads
With the speed of a flame tossed in the hay and escapes from
Your control destroying everything in your life, without giving you a Chance of correcting your wrong.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
