Lessons of the Stream

The steam flows with
Such an even, sincere trickle,
We can not help but to feel at peace.
It’s obliviousness to all around it,
Inspires us to be more like the stream.
We want no worries, no obligations.
Why can not everything
Be as peaceful and serene,
As this trickling stream?
Alas, for the stream’s purpose
Is to taunt us,
For nothing can be so peaceful,
Else there would be no purpose in life.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
