    In the Hurt of Others

Standing beside you, seeing pain, feeling pain, hearing pain, soft slow sobs that echo as tears run down your cheeks, trying to look into your eyes, but glancing away from your hurt with nothing to do but embrace you, hold you tight, try to make it stop, wishing for a smile, hoping for a laugh, seeing you so vulnerable scares me, makes me feel you, everything you are is transferred through a touch, you grasp my hand, tighter and tighter as the pain becomes overwhelming, and then you stop, let go, this episode is over, you look at me, I try to smile, all the while wondering how long 'til the next bought.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
