In a Garden of the Apocalypse

Since the first is last and the last is first
Evening light settles in the western sun
And opposites meet as one again

Dreaming in a curve of galactic stars
Like leaves fluttering in a wind
    Yellowing under a yellowing sun

    And winter’s freeze coming on
Frosty on the rocks in the mornings
Ice glistening where no man lives

The end is not a sound in sight
No one hand clapping no zen no earth
    All unnecessary preparations and profane

Means in the stillness in an end of time
As a sacred enclosure girds a screaming collapse
Of all matter into thought where thought vanishes

Into a billion billion suns who shined under
The shattered dome of everything of light
As a silence enters suddenly like nothing

    Ever known before or since
A glowing indication to the many martyred
For causes of heaven who never had a cause

But one sound listening in the end of things to come
One last wisp of breath beginning its Breath
In a rising sun where opposites clashed

Once upon a time without end conceived without words
Without currents of news and nights without moons
And thought nothing of it when the full moon rose

One last time and a landscape from a forgotten
Source rose behind the moon enfolding the trembling
Heart of the man there beside the sea watching all this unfold

With freedom’s blazing star unborn free
Rising through the debris of spent ages of man
Rising on the horizon on this the last day on earth

Poetry is either something that lives like fire inside you or else it is nothing, an empty formalized bore around which pedants can endlessly drone their notes and explanations.
