I Did It Just For You

I Did It Just For You

I did not need to rise early in the morning
In the cool crisp air
While the stars peeped over my shoulder
They did not notice I wasn't there
But while they were sleeping
Tucked safe inside
I prayed for them
And made the sacrifice
I did it just for you

I did not need to stroll through your markets
And down your dusty roads
When some wanted me to touch them
Others just to brush up against my clothes
You did not send for me
But I came anyway
I wanted you to see
Just how far you have strayed
I did it just for you

I did not need to carry the cross and bare the nails
I did not need the pain
Of being misunderstood
Having to take the blame
But when I stood up on the third day
And walked out of a borrowed tomb
You were not there to see
That I did it just for you

I did it all just for you

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
