Hell is a cold desert

Hell is a cold desert

She wanted to go to the museum
to make me see a painting,
« The Fall of the Damned » by
Peter Paul Rubens.
(If you haven't seen this painting,
take a look on a website.)

- Prodigious skills, she told me, and big mistake.
All these damned souls mingling
in a burning Fall. Think about the time
you've been the most unhappy. You were alone
with your burden and most of all you were
cold. Hell is not a howling furnace,
It is a cold desert
with nobody else
but you.

I like the the thought provoking words about how hell is a cold without no one, at least if screaming in pain with someone you are not alone.

thanks a lot for commenting :)

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
