    For What?

Our men and women went to war
For what most of us are not sure.
In mortal danger they went to fight
So we all could sleep peacefully at night.
In fields of sand and dirt they went
To an unknown country they were sent.
They fight for what we cannot see
    Fighting against an unknown tyranny.
Our men and women went to war
Even if "for what" we are not sure.
So look around at what we all share
Our homes, our jobs, our mountains and our fairs,
Our right to live, love, work or pray.
Be thankful for all these things
Yet do not forget those Army, Navy, Air Force or Marines
When they fight on a distant shore
While you went to sleep and awoke once more.
Our men and women went to war
Even though "for what" we are not sure.
They left their families, children and wives
To take a stand or give their lives.
Be proud of those women and men
We needed them once and we may again.
So say a prayer of thanks
To those who join our military ranks.
A courage we at home will never know
In valiant silence every new day they show.
Our men and women all go to war
Even if "for what" we are not sure.
Their job is to do or die
Even if the rest of us are not sure why.
So give them all a heartfelt thanks
Whether they march, fly, sail or ride in tanks.
Just remember those who walk so tall,
As you work, play or shop in malls.
They fight for which we cannot see
Like our chance to live, love, laugh, cry or be free.
Give respect to those on that distant shore,
Be proud when they return once more.
Give a daily prayer to those who died
For our men and women who stood by our side.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
