Poem Commentary

-Fate-

By Josh Shafer

*A Writing of Enlightenment*

Fate

Do you believe in fate?

The perfect alignment of events

Of places, people, and time

That mysterious force

That causes people’s lives to cross paths

Sometimes unknowingly

But others causing explosions of emotions

Some are happy

And some are sad

Events unfolding to a birth or a death

Two opposite forces dueling for life’s pathways

The wonderful yet horrible journey to an end

Yet one ending is always another beginning

And if two people’s lives never passed

The good times, the bad times

All would not matter

Because we wouldn’t be who we are today without them

So be thankful for those people you’ve crossed paths with in life

Because you owe your future to them

Even with the bad things that they’ve brought

They have also brought the good

For without one, you wouldn’t know what the other is

It would all just be a blur of natural nothingness

There would be nothing for a comparison

And even though two people’s lives may drift apart

Who knows what good old fate has in store for them

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
