    Etched in Stone

    Today it was her birthday
    She turned her sweet sixteen,
She was blond with blue eyes
    And very tall and lean.

    Her parents had been fighting
    On that very day,
When she got up and turned to go
    They never looked her way.

She knew not where to go
But hoped that she could find,
The love she did not have at home
The love that plagued her mind.

She found what she was looking for
    Within that man's embrace,
The memories of that dreadful night
Are the ones they can't erase.

If they could have loved her
If somehow they could have known,
That the day their daughter turned sixteen
Would be forever Etched in Stone.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
