DELUSIONS OF LOVE

PICTURES OF THE CHANGES

THAT I HAVE MADE

SINCE THEN

AND THE SMILES

ONLY HALF GIVEN

AND THE EYES

THAT ARE ALIGHT

AND DRIVEN

BY WHAT USED TO BE

THE FANTASY

OF WHAT WE NEVER WERE

AND SO WHAT ARE WE NOW

BUT THE EMBODIMENT

OF OUR FAILURE

TO MASTER THE INTRACACIES

AND SIMPLICITIES

OF OUR HUMAN COUNTERPARTS

AND YET CHOOSE

TO BELIEVE

THE OPPOSITE IS TRUE

THE OLDER WE GET

THE MORE GLARINGLY

OBVIOUS

OUR BANKRUPT SOULS

AND THE FUTILITY

OF OUR ATTEMPTS

TO FILL THE MANY HOLES

INTO WHICH WE FALL

WITH RANDOM PRECISION AND SUPRISE.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
