Autumn Memories
My earliest Autumn memories are of the general feel of something special on its way....the wind would blow chillier, ringlets of fireplace smoke would circle the chimneys, and fill the air with a sweet smokiness that spoke of home and warmth...
I remember crunching through the leaves, which would turn brilliant colors...and the parties to celebrate it all!
Halloween parties with brightly colored orange and black streamers hung throughout, and nut cups and party frills, black cats and big yellow moons...
The tricks were apple bobbing and cake walks, musical chairs and costume contests...the treats were homemade carmel corn, candied apples and spiced donuts...all washed down with warm apple cider or hot chocolate and marshmallows...
I remember floating home after these parties, in a flurry of golden glitter and bright orange ribbon, clutching my sack of treats, and anxiously looking forward to the parties that would now be ushered in with this first celebration of Autumn!
