    Albatross

Feathers strewn to left of me
    feathers strewn to right
    gazing downwards towards the sea
    an Albatross in flight.

Dare to fly where the red ball gleams
to the land of seraphs’ tunes
    elevate to a lofty height
    grazing a waning moon

    A tenant of the sea
but a sovereign of the air
I take to flight as every night
    to protect the forlorn sea-faire

I serve to guide as I preside
    over the tempest sea
    caught within a dire strait
    a ketch has spotted me

As a benefactor I dare to serve
    this desperate ship below
I guide it east and south
to the land of ice and snow

    An altruist I fly
    over this Ice and Snow
hark, what is this I see
but the glimmer of a crossbow

Through my pure and loving heart
    a cold piece of steel
a bird so innocent and kind
the wrath of the sea he’ll feel

Sailors strewn to left of me
    Sailors strewn right
    hung around a mariner’s neck
    my humble burial site

And so I remain a symbol
    around that cursed neck
    an emblem of a burden
a bane on the mariner’s deck

    Hampton commented on Albatross

Another very creative poem with a not so happy ending. Again I suggest you work on your meter. It is fine in some areas and not so fine in others. It's a problem we all have to work on.

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

    Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
