“On Their List”
I came back to the town where I was raised
To take care of dad, and at first I was praised;
But when I thought to find a place in their community
To contribute my skills towards all that they could be,
That’s when they first put me on their list.
They all want to save the town, they say,
But times, they have taken their options away.
The truth is they long ago were left behind
Their thinking still stuck back in ‘59
Don’t suggest changes, or you’ll be next on their list.
Still, I organized a Chamber, promoted the town,
Set up a website to build some renown,
Joined the Ambulance, became an EMT,
Ran for Mayor, but nothing made a difference, you see,
All it earned me was a place on their list.
It falls on deaf ears when I tell them again,
That to do the same thing over and over without end
And expect a different outcome is just plain insanity.
You can’t save the school unless you do things differently.
But they just wouldn’t listen; I’m still on their list.
She wants us to open up the books, he says,
And see what we’ve done, and it makes them see red,
Cause no one has the right to question what they do,
Never mind the laws, and if you don’t agree, you’re a fool,
Because then you’ll be next on their list.
She thinks she can tell us it’s against the law
For us to buy liquor and serve at City Hall,
But if she doesn’t like it, she can just call the sheriff
And he can arrest us, and you’d all best beware if
You don’t want to be next on their list.
She must be a lesbian, in whispers, they say,
Cause look how she lives, how alone she stays,
Year in, year out, what else could it be?
It’s just not natural, and you’d best agree
If you don’t want to be next on their list.
They don’t really want to save this town
Or the businesses or school, that’s what I found.
They’d rather be right, that it cannot be done
And attack who I am and say I’m all wrong.
I no longer care that I ended up on their list.
To take care of dad, and at first I was praised;
But when I thought to find a place in their community
To contribute my skills towards all that they could be,
That’s when they first put me on their list.
