a small tree in the park

Poem Commentary

There's actually a picture I took here to complete the poem. It's a rather small tree but whose leaves are yellow. Its color is how it differentiated itself from the rest of the tall and thick pines that has almost covered the significance of this lowly tree. My poem just wanted to recognize its presence.

a small tree in the park

Maybe I just need a bit of work of me,
Allow a change of color
a touch of hue,

Maybe true you find no sturdy strength,
Not like your tallness and green and pride
But no less than my spice of charm,
May capture the tranquility around me

Maybe so my weakly branch won’t have the birds perching,
Yet glare instead at my shine and romantic waving

Maybe I’m not as attractive my neighbor will ever see,
But must I really care or fret?
Maybe I just need a bit of work of me
Allow a change of color,
A touch of hue.

Maybe just trust the God who else so created me,
Maybe small yet worthy as any giant tree

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
