A Poet Am I Not?

A Poet Am I Not?

Am I a poet because I have a quick memory to remind me of which words rhyme?
Or am I a poet because I use this pen to paint the frustration and confusion that is in my mind?
Am I a poet, even though I only write at night when I’m angry and hurt?
Or am I a poet because I know that poetry is a passion that seldom translates into paid work?
Am I a poet even if I don’t want to be heard or seen?
Or am I a poet comfortable with knowing that others like me know what I mean?
Oh yes, I am a poet who recognizes that her poetry can no longer live in her head, it must be shared with the world, it must be read. I am a poet who realizes that this gift is not only a thing of beauty, but it is also the very thing that will set me free!

WELL I GUESS, A POET IS ALL DAT AND MORE.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
