    Young Women Thesr Days

Young women these days don't have much to live for.
Being beaten and raped, called a "Bitch" and a "Whore."
The most fragile lives are abused and treated wrong day by day.
But there is someone you can turn to at night silently pray.
If you call her name she'll never yell at you or do you harm.
She'll surprise you with her beauty, her gentleness and charm.
Even if your own parents won't help you to grow and learn.
La Virgin is your mother, to her you can always turn.
No matter what you have dun, or where you came from,
She'll love you and care for you,
Like she did for her own son.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
