You Already Know

I'm not coming to you talking about how many problems I have.
You've already got the calculations.
I'm not coming to you detailing any of my situations.
You've already got the descriptions.
I'm not coming to you telling you what someone has done to me.
You already saw it.
I'm not coming to you reminding you of who just passed away.
You're comforting their families right now.
For you are all knowing, and all seeing.
You know our thoughts before we think them.
You knew us before we were formed in our mother's womb.
You have charted the very course of our lives.
You know which way we are suppose to go.
You know what we are suppose to do.
You already know. You already know.
I thank you for this opportunity just to come to you.
Knowing that you already know
makes me feel better, and you already know.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
