    When We Were Children

In the moments our of greatest grief we are like the children we once were.

Every obstacle in our lives like the foot of a cosmic bully thrust into our path, we stumble skin our knees and feel the pain of yet another fall.

On hands and knees upon the cracked pavement of our lives wailing over our pain, the crimson heat of anger and humiliation pours into our cheeks as the heartless cosmos points and laughs.

Yet even as children we found the spirit to get to our feet, even knowing that one day the steel boot of fate would return to bring us to our knees.

Our every heartbreak strikes the anvil of our heart with the devastating force we felt at the loss of our first pet.

The crushing realization that nothing is forever squeezes hope into a fluid of grief that pours unbidden from every pore.

Yet even as children we found the fortitude to move forward, and learned to hold those lost to us in memories filled with fondness, we learned to love again.

In our moments of greatest happiness we are most like the children we once were.

Our every fantasy giving us the simple joy we once knew staring through a classroom window, dreaming of the coming summer with feverish anticipation.

Swimming with friends, sleepovers, evenings summers promises of fireworks, fireflies, and stargazing.

As children we found wonder and joy in every new day, waking with the knowledge that the days adventures were ours to create.

Every rain storm a chance to run beneath cleansing droplets, the mud created by the downpour providing the clay for our deepest imaginings.

With every blizzard an opportunity for artic adventures, recklessly we speed down our favorite hill into uncertain futures.

With frozen toes and a red nose we build our snowmen, ice fortresses abounded.  With the battle cry of youth we plunge into snowball fights.

Over and again we learned that for every skinned knee there would come the healing scar.

We learned that for every sickness the fever would break.

For every punch thrown there is a healing kiss from someone who loved us.

When we were children we treated the end of every school day like the beginning of summers first day.

Running headlong for the playground, heedless of the obstacles life would throw in our path.
