    What If?

     Could I have done things better?
    Should I have changed my ways?
    Regretting many outcomes
    I've longed for better days

    I've learned from my sordid past
    A past I won't repeat
    All of the mistakes I've made
    Have led to my defeat

    In hindsight, I now can see
    And know I should have done
    All my best to pass each test
    Because losing's not fun

    Always asking just "what if?"
    I really want to know
    I'm obsessed with this question
    Why can't I let it go?

    Why can't I move forward now?
    Why do I stay upset?
    I need to shake off the past
    Things I want to forget

    All this "what if" thinking has
    Made my whole life a mess
    When I thought I could get more
    I ended up with less

    What if I hadn't hurt you?
    What if we were still friends?
    What if I was more mature?
    I guess it all depends

    I know it depends on me
    The choices I will make
    I'll no longer be haunted
    By every made mistake

    Poetry is either something that lives like fire inside you or else it is nothing, an empty formalized bore around which pedants can endlessly drone their notes and explanations.
