    Traffic Signs

    All the signs pointed right,
we seemed to be following the same path forever
The change never seemed like it would come
and I was feeling closer to you than ever

Suddenly, everything stopped and you made a left turn
I stop moving, falling still, I turn to you
You look me in the eyes,
    and see right through me.
You turn left, and i turn right

We part our ways and suddenly I realize I'm alone
There are no footsteps following my own
I feel as if my legs will give out, but I keep moving
as the emptiness sets in, I keep following our little path
hoping someday to hear footsteps beside my own again.

I look up to find you walking towards me,
    and suddenly I'm whole again...
But you keep walking, you don't recognize me,
and I realize I'm not smiling anymore.

As I walk this road, alone,
I begin to wonder and daydream away
Before I know it, I'm flying and hearing the wings of the one beside me
As I look down below me, I see you and smile...

Parting our ways gave me wings.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
