The Picture

I stare at a picture of a boy
The eyes are empty, void of joy
What could cause such pain inside?
What is the picture trying to hide?
For on the surface it's just a boy with his dad
Yet underneath the boy seems so lost and sad
I try to look deeper for I know it's there
Something he does not wish to share
Then it hits me, the picture is not quite done
It is missing a special someone
Without being told I know she's been gone for awhile
Leaving her boy without even a hint of a smile
I turn to go with a tear in my eye
Telling myself you will not cry
Yet I fail because  I know that boy will soon be my son
In a picture missing a special someone

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
