    ...AND ALL THAT IS
    IT SEEMS
    IT SEEMS
    I STAND BESIDE
    THE LONELY TREE
    AND CLIMB ALONG
    IT'S ONLY BRANCH
    AND SIT AND SWAY
    ABOVE THE GROUND
    BUT THEN IT CAME
    A SILENT WIND
    THAT BLEW ME DOWN
    TO CLIMB UP AGAIN
    I SAT
    AND LOOKED
    ACROSS THE LAND
    THEN CLIMBED
    BACK DOWN
    AND SAT THERE
    UPON ON THE GROUND
    I FELL ASLEEP
    AND IT DID SEEM
    THE LONELY TREE
    DID STAY WITH ME
    BESIDES IT'S ROOTS
    I YAWNED AND WOKE
    THE LONELY TREE
    IT'S BRANCH
    IT BROKE
    AND COVERED ME
    THERE WHERE I SLEPT
    AND AS I STOOD
    I DID
    I WEPT
    AND ASKED IT WHY
    OH BUT YOU SEE
    YOU DID NOT LEAVE
    YOU STAYED WITH ME
    AND AS YOU SLEPT
    I SAW YOU SHIVER
    IT WAS ONLY MY LEAVES
    I HAD TO DELIVER
    BUT STILL I WANTED
    TO HOLD YOU NEAR
BUT WHEN I REACHED FOR YOU
    I BROKE I FEAR
    SO THEN IT WAS ALL
    THAT I COULD GIVE
    YOU MADE IT WORTH
    THE TIME I'VE LIVED
    AND THERE WE SAT
    THE TREE AND I
    AND WHEN
    IT TOLD ME
    NOT TO CRY
    MY HEART
    DID BEAT
    AND STILL
    ASK WHY
    .
    .

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
