    The Carousel

up and down, round and round

    the cycle goes on

your dad smiles down as he stands guard

in case your trusty steed might fail to hold

The world spins, round and round

slow enough to keep you from losing your mind

yet fast enough to prevent any true focus

and your hands hold tight to the shiny pole

then as everything goes, round and round

    you begin to slow

yet the music goes on, it never slows

and you wonder how it was over so quickly

    when the wheels stop turning

    and your horse becomes still

it feels too soon and you don't want to let go

of the shiny pole that you gripped so tight

    But your father assures you

"your turn is over, its time to go home"

and his face seems so honest

and his touch is so kind

    Looking out at the others

    standing there in the line

anticipating the chance to give it a go,

ride for awhile until its time to go home

and you know that the cycle is not meant to hold-

every person who wishes not to go home

you must take your turn and make it the best

so you don't have to leave with any regrets

and with one last glance you realize its time

and you let go of the pole and its shine

with your hand in your dad’s you hop off your mount

and you know that there will be other days, round and round.

I like the description of the carousel ride, it brings me back to being a child againand the wonder and excitement and then the disappointment when it's over, you captured it well in a poetic way no less!

Poetry is either something that lives like fire inside you or else it is nothing, an empty formalized bore around which pedants can endlessly drone their notes and explanations.
