The Caged Bird (Inspired by Maya Angelou)

I'm singing in my cage
thinking of the day
I will finally be free
I wake up early
to catch the worm
but all I get is seeds
The seeds are dry and bitter
I'd rather taste freedom
Fly with the other birds
see different people
I want to see the world
beyond these bars
I want to spread my wings
among the stars
soon my dream will be a reality
I will fly so far, so free
but until that day comes
I'm confined to my cage
singing until my heart gives away
But don't be sad for me
for I sing because in my heart
I know that one day
I will leave and be free
to go wherever the wind takes me

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
