Poem Commentary

Could we not find a way to communicate? Is war inevitable in our time, can forgiveness not be redeemed or is this our appointed round to endure?

The Battle of Friendship

  THE BATTLE OF FRIENDSHIP

I pray we don't meet in a battle
   of winter,
Instead I pray it is the life of
spring better the heat of summer.
But if it is the battle of winter
my camp I will not share
warmth and food you'll find not
    there.

And if you call me friend
    I'll be forever foe
For if we meet in a battle of
    winter
Your body a guest will the earth
    hold.

It is better I say we meet
in the battle of summer
and that the heat of love will
hold til winter not be seen.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
