Soldier's Mom

Poem Commentary

I wrote this poem for my Son when he went to Iraq after 9/11, to let him know how I felt. He was 17 years old and I was having trouble with an empty nest and the fact he was going to war. I was very worried and concerned and decided to write this poem to help me to accept the situation at hand. I wanted this poem to give me Hope and maybe other Soldier Mom's, too.I started out this poem in much stressed and as I got to the end I realized that I have taught my Son to rely on God and trust in him. I knew I had to do the same. So I let the stress and worry go and trusted in God to watch over and keep my Son safe from harm. And God did.

Soldier's Mom

I am a Mother of a Soldier, with pride and concern for her Son.

At first my concern was the apron strings, tied to this one so young.

But, where did this hell come from, that breaks the hearts of our land?

Now I have to be a Soldier Mom, fighting tears, standing tall as I can.

On the Promises of God I will stand, with Prayer Hope and Love.

For that is what I have taught my Son, true strenght comes from above.

Somebody once said a soldier who prays for war is a fool one who prays will survive.. and I know how prayer from family and friends help one survive military life.. I'm an army brat dad did 30 in then I did my 20 and have younger brother who did 22... and mom was there for all of us waiting for us to come home... How sad it takes a 911 to wake the nation up to why we have a military...?! OH and I begged the draft board to come get me out of nam put me in jail... but they for some reason didn't and I did my time in nam...

Amen, I am an ex-soldier. My mother needed to read that when I was shipped out, oh God, I thought she was going to lose it while I was away...

Poetry is what is lost in translation.
