    Praying For Peace

    I cried
For all those lives now gone
for the laughter and smiles soon lost,
    as all cheer was withdrawn.

    I died
    Every moment of each day
standing alone in silence and fear,
wrapped in a web of decay

    I prayed
As each drop more precious than gold
    flowed red through the streets,
stark contrast against cold white stone.

    I watched,
    Locked in a nightmare
    while children grew into beasts
crying out to all who'll listen
    praying into the darkness,

    For silence

    For Peace

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
