    poem

    she lives on thirteenth street
    she sleeps on the concrete
    nobody knows her name

    she's been there forever
    through all kinds of weather
    and she always dresses the same

    once she was pretty
    but the filth of the city
    now covers her from head to toe

    the little children ask why
    when they pass her by
    but their parents don't really know

    and neither do i

    The homeless - often forgotten, overlooked, nameless - poems like these help us pay attention and remember. Nicely written.

    Poetry comes nearer to vital truth than history.
