    Not To Be

I can not watch the sunrise
    nor hear the oceans roar
I can not see the skies of blue
    up where the eagles soar
I can not smell the rain that falls
    on a summers afternoon
I will never know the stars at night
nor the fullness of the moon
I can not be your comfort
    Should your heart be broken
I can never feel the love you give
from words that you have spoken
I can never share the joy you feel
    on any given day
I can not even if I try
no matter just how hard I pray
I can not stop to smell the roses
nor feel the pain upon it’s thorn
You decided I was not to be
    So I wasn’t even born

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
