Mirror

You are a mirror with a thousand faces.

You called me friend a thousand different ways (and never knew).

You carried my heart across a thousand rivers I could not cross alone.

You turned my troubles into hopes (and did not know).

You made my hopes into dreams I could not see.

And made my dreams become as real as any might seem.

Did you know my name?

And if you did does it matter?

Did you know how closely I followed your steps?

Across an empty field of sorrow?

Only to learn you are like me.

Looking for yourself in the eyes of others.

The many faces.

Turning around to see a picture of themselves.

And reminding us who we all are.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
