Love's Cost

Love's Cost

I trusted you,

Gave you my heart.

Promised to be true to you

No matter what the cost.

Love, honor, cherish, and obey -

They weren’t just words to me.

But I’ve spent far too many nights

In tears upon my knees.

Begging God to keep you safe

While work took you away.

Except it wasn’t really work

That kept you out so late.

I made those vows with eager joy

Now I regret the haste

For even though you said the words

Your eyes and hands still strayed.

Now I wish I’d never met you.

I wish I didn’t care.

‘Cause all you’ve given me is grief,

Deep heartache and despair.

You took my love for granted,

Betrayed my tender trust

With lying eyes and wandering  hands

As you gave in to lust.

Now you say you’re sorry,

But you’ve told me that before.

And the lies, the empty promises

I can no more ignore.

I can’t forget the lonely nights,

The secrets, and the lies.

I promised to be true to you

But the cost is just too high.
